1 Corinthians 6

June 22, 2022

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” (v19-20)

Jesus’ shed blood didn’t just pay the price to forgive us. It paid the price for us. Jesus’ blood purchased us, so that He now “owns us” (v19). Not because He’s selfish, but because He made us for Himself. Sadly, some of us (who call ourselves Christians) don’t view our relationship with God that way. Some of us like the forgiveness part, but we’re not as keen on the “Jesus owns me” part. But we don’t get to pick and choose the parts of the Bible that we like. It’s all or nothing. Paul here says that Jesus paid the price to redeem us – so that we are now fitted for God to dwell in us. And if our eyes have been opened to the fact that God Himself died for and now dwells in us; that our bodies are now a temple of His Spirit, how can that not change how I view my body?

Father, I praise You for seeking to be so close to us - that You made a way to dwell within us. And I thank You for Your great sacrifice for our sins - that ransomed and redeemed us - so that we are now fitted to be temples of Your Holy Spirit. That is the only way we could ever be in Your presence without being destroyed by Your holiness. Forgive me (and Your people), Lord, for buying the cultural lie that my body is mine. Today, I declare anew that my body belongs to You twice over - once by way of creation, since you made me, and again by way of redemption, since You paid the price to ransom me. Empower me today to honor You with every part of my body!

Use the following steps to guide your daily time with the Lord…

  • Start with prayer. Ask God to open your heart to help you understand and receive His Word.

  • Read and observe the passage carefully. As needed, read a second Bible version to help with understanding.

    ➡️ What does it say?

What does this passage teach me about God? What does it say about my sinful nature and my need for God’s grace? How does this passage point to Jesus?

  • ➡️ What am I going to do about it?

Does this passage include a promise to claim, an action/attitude to avoid/embrace, or a principle to apply? How can this truth apply to my life? What could my next step be? How can I share this with others? Is there a verse or section of Scripture I need to memorize?
