Matthew 20

December 20, 2022

“Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was going by, they shouted, ‘Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!’ The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet, but they shouted all the louder, ‘Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!’ Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him.” (v30-31, 34)

I love the boldness of these blind men, shouting for Jesus, even after the crowd rebukes them for causing a scene. These men were unconcerned with people’s opinions of them and consumed with getting Jesus’ attention. And Jesus took note of their desperate faith, had compassion on them, and healed them - the result of which was not only that they could now see, but that they “followed Him” (v34).

Lord Jesus, I praise You that You hear the cries of those in pain. And so, like these men in Matthew 20, I call out to You, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” You know how I’ve struggled over the years to answer this question, “What do you want Me to do for you?” (v32). Today, I have an answer: I want to be healed and restored to health. I want to be healed, not just so I can live without such constant daily pain, but so that I might have greater strength to better serve those that You’ve entrusted to me.

Use the following steps to guide your daily time with the Lord…

  • Start with prayer. Ask God to open your heart to help you understand and receive His Word.

  • Read and observe the passage carefully. As needed, read a second Bible version to help with understanding.

    ➡️ What does it say?

What does this passage teach me about God? What does it say about my sinful nature and my need for God’s grace? How does this passage point to Jesus?

  • ➡️ What am I going to do about it?

Does this passage include a promise to claim, an action/attitude to avoid/embrace, or a principle to apply? How can this truth apply to my life? What could my next step be? How can I share this with others? Is there a verse or section of Scripture I need to memorize?
