1 John 3

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” (v1)
God is our Creator, who made us. God is our Judge, who will judge us. God is our King, who rules over us. God is our Lord, who leads us. But in Christ, God is also now our Father, who loves us. No longer are we simply subjects, slaves or servants. In Christ, we are now sons and daughters! No wonder the first thing Jesus taught his disciples about prayer was to call God our “Father,” our “Abba” (literally our ‘Daddy’).
Our Father, I praise You for the greatness of who You are: Creator of the universe, righteous Judge, King of kings and Lord of lords. As Creator and King, I’m moved to bow down before You in reverence and submission. But the fact that You are also my Father moves me to crawl up into Your lap and rest in Your lavish love (v1). You are Lord and Love. May I see You clearly as both today, so that I live with both reverence before You and rest in You.

Use the following steps to guide your daily time with the Lord…
-
Start with prayer. Ask God to open your heart to help you understand and receive His Word.
-
Read and observe the passage carefully. As needed, read a second Bible version to help with understanding.
➡️ What does it say?
What does this passage teach me about God? What does it say about my sinful nature and my need for God’s grace? How does this passage point to Jesus?
-
➡️ What am I going to do about it?
Does this passage include a promise to claim, an action/attitude to avoid/embrace, or a principle to apply? How can this truth apply to my life? What could my next step be? How can I share this with others? Is there a verse or section of Scripture I need to memorize?
