1 Timothy 1

August 15, 2022

“Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life.” ‭‭(v15-16)

There is a progression of humility in Paul’s life:

  • “Paul, an apostle.” (Gal 1:1 - written in 51 AD)

  • “I am the least of the apostles, and not worthy to be called an apostle.” (1 Cor 15:9 - written in 56 AD)

  • “I am less than the least of all God’s people.” (Eph 3:8 - written in 60 AD)

  • “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the worst.” (1 Tim 1:15 - written in 64 AD)

The more Paul matured in his faith, the more he recognized his own sin. He wasn’t becoming more sinful; he just saw himself in light of the Lord’s holiness. This, in turn, heightened his recognition of God’s mercy toward him, which is what Paul testifies to, here, in 1 Timothy 1.

Father, I praise You for the power of the gospel - to not only save, but to transform us from being proud and self-righteous to humble and grateful. As happened in Paul’s life - may I grow in humility - the longer I walk with You and serve You. May my testimony be like that of John Newton, the ex-slave trader and author of Amazing Grace, who, at the end of his life, testified, “Although my memory's fading, I remember two things very clearly: I am a great sinner and Christ is a great Savior.”

Use the following steps to guide your daily time with the Lord…

  • Start with prayer. Ask God to open your heart to help you understand and receive His Word.

  • Read and observe the passage carefully. As needed, read a second Bible version to help with understanding.

    ➡️ What does it say?

What does this passage teach me about God? What does it say about my sinful nature and my need for God’s grace? How does this passage point to Jesus?

  • ➡️ What am I going to do about it?

Does this passage include a promise to claim, an action/attitude to avoid/embrace, or a principle to apply? How can this truth apply to my life? What could my next step be? How can I share this with others? Is there a verse or section of Scripture I need to memorize?
