2 Corinthians 10

July 20, 2022

“By the humility and gentleness of Christ, I appeal to you—I, Paul, who am “timid” when face to face with you, but “bold” toward you when away! I beg you that when I come I may not have to be as bold as I expect to be toward some people who think that we live by the standards of this world.” (v1-2)

Paul knows that he may need to be “bold” in his correction of the Corinthians, especially those who are living according to the “standards of this world” (v2). But even then, Paul makes his bold appeal “by the humility and gentleness of Christ” (v1). How is it that Paul can be both bold and humble? Because his appeal is not marked by any sense of self-righteousness. There is no boasting in himself. That’s why he concludes the chapter with the words, “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord” (v17).

Father, I declare Your greatness. I praise You for You alone are worthy. Forgive me for any occasions when I’ve slipped into thinking too much of myself or started relying on myself. Grow in me both a humility before You and a boldness because of You - so that all my words to Your people point to Your greatness and are marked by gentleness.
