2 Corinthians 6

July 14, 2022

“Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: ‘I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.’ Therefore, ‘Come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.’” ‭(v14, 16-17)

God wants a people who will live in faithful covenant with Him alone. He is a jealous God, but not because He’s insecure or narcissistic. Rather, His jealousy is connected to His love and commitment to covenant - much the same way a good spouse would be appropriately jealous if their spouse were flirting with someone else. For now, we live in a world with many idols that seek after our affections. But we don’t have to give ourselves to them. With the Spirit’s help, we can keep ourselves for God alone - even if we look increasingly weird for not indulging in what the world indulges in.

Father, I praise You for Your faithfulness to the covenant You’ve established with me through Christ. Thank you for Your jealous love that chases after me when I’m tempted to chase after false gods - gods that promise life, but only deliver death. Increase in me a willingness to look weird to this world (and even to some in the church), so that I don’t give my heart to anyone other than You. Lord Jesus, You are worth more than any pleasure this world has to offer. I gladly wait for You and Your coming Kingdom, which will make the delicacies of sin look like chopped liver!

Use the following steps to guide your daily time with the Lord…

  • Start with prayer. Ask God to open your heart to help you understand and receive His Word.

  • Read and observe the passage carefully. As needed, read a second Bible version to help with understanding.

    ➡️ What does it say?

What does this passage teach me about God? What does it say about my sinful nature and my need for God’s grace? How does this passage point to Jesus?

  • ➡️ What am I going to do about it?

Does this passage include a promise to claim, an action/attitude to avoid/embrace, or a principle to apply? How can this truth apply to my life? What could my next step be? How can I share this with others? Is there a verse or section of Scripture I need to memorize?
