John 1
September 13, 2022
“The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, ‘Look, the Lamb of God!’ When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.” (v35-37)
John the Baptizer had a very simple mission and message. His mission was to point to Jesus. His message was: ‘Jesus is the Lamb of God, who takes away our sins’ (v29, 36). Thus, when Jesus came on the scene, John was not offended that his disciples left him to go follow Jesus. John’s goal was not to build up his own reputation or increase the number of his followers. What a beautiful picture of relinquishing ego for the sake of pointing others to Jesus.
Lord Jesus, I praise You for being Messiah, Savior, and the Lamb who takes away my sins! Like John, I want my life and ministry to be a signpost to You. Forgive me when I slip into thinking about my own success or reputation in the eyes of people. May my mission and message simply be: “I’m just a nobody, trying to tell everybody about a Somebody who came to save anybody…”
