John 14
September 30, 2022
“If you love me, keep my commands.” (v15)
“Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me.” (v21)
“Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching.” (v23)
Anytime Scripture mentions something three times, it’s like a neon sign calling us to pay attention. Jesus, here, tells us three times (v15, 21, 23) that loving Him will lead to obeying Him. In a day and age where “love” is being defined simply by feelings and orientation - Jesus defines “love” in terms of a commitment to choose to obey Him.
Lord Jesus, I praise You for Your commitment to obey the Father - for the sake of fulfilling the plan of salvation. Thank You for not letting Your feelings dictate Your actions - especially in the Garden of Gethsemane, when Your flesh wanted a softer path than the cross. You loved us so much that You CHOSE the cross. May I love You today by CHOOSING to obey You, knowing it will not only lead to Your glory, but my ultimate good.

Use the following steps to guide your daily time with the Lord…
-
Start with prayer. Ask God to open your heart to help you understand and receive His Word.
-
Read and observe the passage carefully. As needed, read a second Bible version to help with understanding.
➡️ What does it say?
What does this passage teach me about God? What does it say about my sinful nature and my need for God’s grace? How does this passage point to Jesus?
-
➡️ What am I going to do about it?
Does this passage include a promise to claim, an action/attitude to avoid/embrace, or a principle to apply? How can this truth apply to my life? What could my next step be? How can I share this with others? Is there a verse or section of Scripture I need to memorize?
