John 16
October 4, 2022
“But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment.” (v7-8)
Jesus promises us the Holy Spirit, who (according to this chapter) serves many roles in our lives: Counselor, Comforter, Revealer of Truth, Signpost to Jesus. But the first role the Spirit is said to play is that He will convict the world of guilt. The Spirit is always seeking to open our eyes to see Jesus as Savior - and so He first needs to show us our sin before we can see our need for a Savior. It’s actually God’s grace at work (and “for our good” - v7) when the Spirit opens an unbeliever’s eyes to their sin.
Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I praise You for how each of You was involved in my salvation. Thank You for the convicting grace of the Holy Spirit, who opened my eyes to the saving grace of Jesus, who drew me into the adopting grace of the Father. Hallelujah! Even now, I pray for the convicting grace of the Spirit for loved ones and family members who do not yet see their sin and need for a Savior. Open their eyes, Holy Spirit - and draw them to the Father, through Jesus.

Use the following steps to guide your daily time with the Lord…
-
Start with prayer. Ask God to open your heart to help you understand and receive His Word.
-
Read and observe the passage carefully. As needed, read a second Bible version to help with understanding.
➡️ What does it say?
What does this passage teach me about God? What does it say about my sinful nature and my need for God’s grace? How does this passage point to Jesus?
-
➡️ What am I going to do about it?
Does this passage include a promise to claim, an action/attitude to avoid/embrace, or a principle to apply? How can this truth apply to my life? What could my next step be? How can I share this with others? Is there a verse or section of Scripture I need to memorize?
