Mark 10

May 13, 2022

“As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (which means ‘son of Timaeus’), was sitting by the roadside begging. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, ‘Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!’ Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, ‘Son of David, have mercy on me!’” ‭‭(v46-48)

Jesus’ reputation had certainly preceded Him, so it’s no wonder that blind Bartimaeus started shouting for Jesus to help him. However, after being rebuked by the crowd to be quiet, most folks would buckle under the peer pressure and be quiet. Not Bartimaeus. He “shouted all the more” (v48), undeterred by the opinions of man, and motivated solely by his hope of getting the attention of Jesus. And the result of his passionate pursuit of Jesus was the help and healing of Jesus (v52).

Lord, You love it when I call out to You for help. You are never bothered or annoyed by my pleas. Forgive me for not always boldly expressing my needs to You. I confess a spirit of self-sufficiency that too often gets in the way taking a posture of neediness before You. Today, I kneel before You and (like Bartimaeus) call out to You - asking for Your daily bread of wisdom, patience, and strength. Thank You, in advance, for how You will answer my cries for help, and will show Yourself to be strong and sufficient.

Use the following steps to guide your daily time with the Lord…

  • Start with prayer. Ask God to open your heart to help you understand and receive His Word.

  • Read and observe the passage carefully. As needed, read a second Bible version to help with understanding.

    ➡️ What does it say?

What does this passage teach me about God? What does it say about my sinful nature and my need for God’s grace? How does this passage point to Jesus?

  • ➡️ What am I going to do about it?

Does this passage include a promise to claim, an action/attitude to avoid/embrace, or a principle to apply? How can this truth apply to my life? What could my next step be? How can I share this with others? Is there a verse or section of Scripture I need to memorize?
