Matthew 11

December 7, 2022

“All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”(v27-30)

Jesus gives us a beautiful promise of “rest for our souls” (v29), which is ours if we will simply “come to Him” (v28). But the reason Jesus can offer us what our souls so desperately need is because of the unique relationship He has to the Father. “No one knows the Father except the Son” (v27). In other words, this is Matthew’s way of saying what John’s Gospel declares about Jesus - that “No one can come to the Father, except through the Son” (John 14:6). But when we come to Him, we find the very thing we most need: “rest for our souls.” What a gift!

Jesus, I worship You as the Son of God, the Second Person of the Trinity, and the One in unique relationship with the Father - such that You alone can offer rest for my soul. And so, this morning I come to You. You know where I am “weary and burdened” (v28), and so I lay myself before You and my burdens on You, trusting that as I yoke myself to You, Your shoulders are strong enough to carry them (and me) through this day.

Use the following steps to guide your daily time with the Lord…

  • Start with prayer. Ask God to open your heart to help you understand and receive His Word.

  • Read and observe the passage carefully. As needed, read a second Bible version to help with understanding.

    ➡️ What does it say?

What does this passage teach me about God? What does it say about my sinful nature and my need for God’s grace? How does this passage point to Jesus?

  • ➡️ What am I going to do about it?

Does this passage include a promise to claim, an action/attitude to avoid/embrace, or a principle to apply? How can this truth apply to my life? What could my next step be? How can I share this with others? Is there a verse or section of Scripture I need to memorize?
