Matthew 17
December 15, 2022
“Peter said to Jesus, ‘Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.’ While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!’” (v4-5)
Peter knows something amazing is happening before his eyes. To be in the presence of Moses, the Lawgiver, and Elijah, the greatest of the prophets, and Jesus, the Messiah - Wow! But Peter’s idea to build each of them a shelter was evidence that he didn’t yet see the superiority of Jesus to these great heroes of the faith. Thus, God’s declaration from Heaven: “This (Jesus) is My Son, whom I love. Listen to Him” (v5).
Lord Jesus, I declare Your greatness and superiority over every religious figure who has ever lived. You alone have the words to eternal life (John 6:68). You alone are the Way to the Father (John 14:6). You alone have the only name under Heaven by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). You alone are “God’s Son” (v5). Therefore, as God called Peter to do - may I listen to You, hanging on and heeding every word You speak.
