Romans 4

May 27, 2022

“This is why it was credited to him as righteousness. The words ‘it was credited to him’ were written not for him alone, but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness - for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.” (v22-24)

The debt we owed God because of our sin (Rom 3:23) was so great, we could never do enough to pay it off. But when we put our trust in Christ, God credits our spiritual account with “righteousness.” Now, we are no longer bound for Debtor’s Prison. We are free, forgiven, “justified” (v25). And the debit of righteousness that He applies to our spiritual account not only pays off our debt, but it results in an “inheritance that will never perish, spoil or fade” (1 Peter 1:4).

Father, I praise You for saving me from spiritual bankruptcy and for giving me an eternal inheritance. What a glorious rags to riches story. May I live this day, rejoicing in who I am and what I have been given in Christ. I am a child of the King and an heir in His Kingdom - with an inheritance more secure than any retirement plan! Hallelujah!

Use the following steps to guide your daily time with the Lord…

  • Start with prayer. Ask God to open your heart to help you understand and receive His Word.

  • Read and observe the passage carefully. As needed, read a second Bible version to help with understanding.

    ➡️ What does it say?

What does this passage teach me about God? What does it say about my sinful nature and my need for God’s grace? How does this passage point to Jesus?

  • ➡️ What am I going to do about it?

Does this passage include a promise to claim, an action/attitude to avoid/embrace, or a principle to apply? How can this truth apply to my life? What could my next step be? How can I share this with others? Is there a verse or section of Scripture I need to memorize?
