Romans 6
May 31, 2022
“What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?” (v1-2)
Paul knew that preaching the gospel of God’s grace would lead some Christians to believe that we may as well go on sinning so that grace might increase. Paul anticipates this loophole logic, and so asks this question in v1 – so that he can correct it. Paul’s short answer to the question of whether we should go on sinning so that grace might increase is, “By no means!” And that’s because, as Paul explains in Romans 6, the only people who think that deliberately sinning is an appropriate response to God’s grace – are those who do not really understand God’s grace.
Father, the gospel is such good news because it means Your grace is greater than all my sin. I no longer need to fear judgment, because, in Christ, You took the judgment - not only for the sins of my past, but for the sins of my present and future. But may my assurance of forgiveness never lead me to apathy, complacency or entitlement. Rather, I pray that You would guard my heart from flirting with sin and grow in me a hatred for sin - that is born out of clarity regarding the price You paid to atone for my sin.
