2 Peter 2
September 9, 2022
“But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their depraved conduct and will bring the way of truth into disrepute.” (v1-2)
God’s people have always needed to be on guard against false teachers infiltrating the church and promoting a religion that tickles ears. Often their message is marked by a neglect of Jesus’ Lordship and a failure to recognize He “bought us” (v1). And that’s because, if Jesus doesn’t own us, we can live however we want to, without any accountability - which is what most false teachers are reaching for. Of course, that kind of autonomy tickles our ears, but it always leads to “destruction” (v2).
Father, I praise You for giving us Your Word as a plumb line for evaluating teachers and teaching. Make me (and Your church) hungry for Your Word. Not only so we get to know You better, but so that we can guard ourselves and the flock from false teachers who would promote religious views that dishonor You and destroy us.

Use the following steps to guide your daily time with the Lord…
-
Start with prayer. Ask God to open your heart to help you understand and receive His Word.
-
Read and observe the passage carefully. As needed, read a second Bible version to help with understanding.
➡️ What does it say?
What does this passage teach me about God? What does it say about my sinful nature and my need for God’s grace? How does this passage point to Jesus?
-
➡️ What am I going to do about it?
Does this passage include a promise to claim, an action/attitude to avoid/embrace, or a principle to apply? How can this truth apply to my life? What could my next step be? How can I share this with others? Is there a verse or section of Scripture I need to memorize?
