Colossians 2

July 27, 2022

“I want you to know how hard I am contending for you and for those at Laodicea, and for all who have not met me personally. My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” (v1-3)

Paul’s life “goal” (v2) was to help people come to know Christ and then teach them about the eternal riches that are theirs in Christ. Knowing Christ (and knowing who we are in Christ) was the magnum opus message Paul preached - because Christ is the “treasure-trove” (v3) of riches.

Father, I praise You for the gift of knowing Christ. Not only because I’m a sinner, who needs a Savior - but because Christ is the Source of every treasure that my heart longs for: affirmation, acceptance, security, and a sense of purpose. Knowing Christ is the key that unlocks this treasure trove. And so, I pray that I might grow to know Him better, and grow in my ability to make Him known - so that everyone I talk to and teach might have the “full riches of complete understanding” (v2) of all they have in Christ.

Use the following steps to guide your daily time with the Lord…

  • Start with prayer. Ask God to open your heart to help you understand and receive His Word.

  • Read and observe the passage carefully. As needed, read a second Bible version to help with understanding.

    ➡️ What does it say?

What does this passage teach me about God? What does it say about my sinful nature and my need for God’s grace? How does this passage point to Jesus?

  • ➡️ What am I going to do about it?

Does this passage include a promise to claim, an action/attitude to avoid/embrace, or a principle to apply? How can this truth apply to my life? What could my next step be? How can I share this with others? Is there a verse or section of Scripture I need to memorize?
