Hebrews 5

April 19, 2022

“During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.” (v7)

Even though Jesus was fully Divine (v5, 8), He was also fully human, and subject to trials and temptations. But unlike the first human being, Adam, who failed to resist temptation, Jesus, remained faithful to the Father in temptation. And not through some unfeeling stoicism, but by “offering up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears,” modeling for us what it looks like to stay surrendered to God in this life.

Father, I praise You for the gift of Jesus - that He did for me what I could not and would not do. Jesus, I praise You for Your example of calling out to the Father for help you to faithfully endure suffering (v8). And Holy Spirit, I praise You that You are able to inspire in me that same response when hardship comes my way. I pray that You would guard me from a spirit of self-sufficiency - and make me quick to follow the example of Him who “offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears” - trusting that He, who is my High Priest, will give me what I need to faithfully endure.

Use the following steps to guide your daily time with the Lord…

  • Start with prayer. Ask God to open your heart to help you understand and receive His Word.

  • Read and observe the passage carefully. As needed, read a second Bible version to help with understanding.

    ➡️ What does it say?

What does this passage teach me about God? What does it say about my sinful nature and my need for God’s grace? How does this passage point to Jesus?

  • ➡️ What am I going to do about it?

Does this passage include a promise to claim, an action/attitude to avoid/embrace, or a principle to apply? How can this truth apply to my life? What could my next step be? How can I share this with others? Is there a verse or section of Scripture I need to memorize?
