Revelation 3
October 26, 2022
“Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you.” (v3)
There are often times in our relationship with God when we don’t need new information, but simply a reminder of “what we’ve received and heard” (v3a). Jesus calls His people in Sardis to “repent” (v3b), but only after calling them to remember. Because so many of us already know what we need to know about God and what we need to do to obey Him, the first word is to “remember it” and the second word is to “repent” and do it. This is why C.S. Lewis says, “Christians often need to be reminded more than instructed.”
Father God, I praise You for all that You’ve done for me and taught me. But I confess I’m prone to forget. Forgive me for how quickly I allow important lessons and stories of Your help and provision to fade. By Your grace, “wake me up” (v3) to remember all that You’ve done for me, all that You’ve taught me, and all that You’re preparing for me. I know that remembering all of this is one of the keys to being renewed in loving You and living for You, so help me to remember.

Start with prayer. Ask God to open your heart to help you understand and receive His Word.
-
Read and observe the passage carefully. As needed, read a second Bible version to help with understanding.
➡️ What does it say?
What does this passage teach me about God? What does it say about my sinful nature and my need for God’s grace? How does this passage point to Jesus?
-
➡️ What am I going to do about it?
Does this passage include a promise to claim, an action/attitude to avoid/embrace, or a principle to apply? How can this truth apply to my life? What could my next step be? How can I share this with others? Is there a verse or section of Scripture I need to memorize?
