Romans 10

June 6, 2022

“Brothers and sisters, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved.” (v1)

This section of Scripture (Rom 9-11) is primarily about how God sovereignly extends “mercy to those He wants to show mercy” (9:18). But that doesn’t mean Paul is cold or calloused about his fellow Israelites, who are outside of Christ. Paul communicates that his “heart’s desire and prayer is for the Israelites to be saved” (v1). Paul’s letter and life are both illustrations of trusting God’s sovereign election, while still calling out to God to save those who don’t yet know Christ.

Father, I praise You for Your sovereignty over all of creation, including the election of those whom You will show mercy. And I also praise you that You are not cold or calloused about the lost - that “You want all to be saved” (1 Tim 2:4). Grow in me both a deep conviction about Your sovereignty, and a deep concern for the lost - that manifests itself (like Paul here in Rom 10:1) in praying for them to be saved. Even now, I lift those loved ones up to You who do not know You - asking for You to open their eyes to their sin and need for the Savior.

Use the following steps to guide your daily time with the Lord…

  • Start with prayer. Ask God to open your heart to help you understand and receive His Word.

  • Read and observe the passage carefully. As needed, read a second Bible version to help with understanding.

    ➡️ What does it say?

What does this passage teach me about God? What does it say about my sinful nature and my need for God’s grace? How does this passage point to Jesus?

  • ➡️ What am I going to do about it?

Does this passage include a promise to claim, an action/attitude to avoid/embrace, or a principle to apply? How can this truth apply to my life? What could my next step be? How can I share this with others? Is there a verse or section of Scripture I need to memorize?
