Romans 11

June 7, 2022

“Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! ‘Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?’ ‘Who has ever given to God, that God should repay them?’ For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen.” (v33-36)

Romans 9-11 is one of the deepest (and most debated) sections of Scripture. The subject of election, the question of how God will keep His promises to Israel (despite their temporary rejection of the gospel), and the way God is using that rejection to reconcile the world (Gentiles) to Himself - these are some deep theological truths that Paul is penning. But, as is fitting, Paul’s theology always concludes with doxology. Doctrine, when rightly understood, should always lead us to praise and worship our great God, who has sovereignly and mercifully (v32) reconciled us to Himself!

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, I praise You for who You are and for all that You’ve done to save me. I acknowledge that Your ways are higher than my ways (Isaiah 55:8-9). Unless You had graciously revealed Yourself to me, I would never know You. Thank You for making Yourself known - in the Living Word, who is Christ, and through the written Word, which is the Scriptures. In grateful response today, I join the Apostle Paul in giving You praise and glory for Your great mercy!

Use the following steps to guide your daily time with the Lord…

  • Start with prayer. Ask God to open your heart to help you understand and receive His Word.

  • Read and observe the passage carefully. As needed, read a second Bible version to help with understanding.

    ➡️ What does it say?

What does this passage teach me about God? What does it say about my sinful nature and my need for God’s grace? How does this passage point to Jesus?

  • ➡️ What am I going to do about it?

Does this passage include a promise to claim, an action/attitude to avoid/embrace, or a principle to apply? How can this truth apply to my life? What could my next step be? How can I share this with others? Is there a verse or section of Scripture I need to memorize?
