Titus 1
August 29, 2022
“Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ to further the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness— in the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time,” (Titus 1:1-2 NIV)
Paul introduces this letter with a declaration that our hope of eternal life is grounded in the promise of a God who does not lie. This is in contrast to those in the world who deceive, shade the truth or outright lie (v10, 12) - for the sake of gaining money, power or influence. Unlike the majority of our society’s talking heads, God can be trusted to keep His promises, which makes His promise of eternal life something we can count on.
Jesus, I praise You for being a promise-keeping God. You always tell the truth, because You are the Truth (John 14:6). Forgive me for ever doubting You or failing to maintain hope in You. Renew in me today confidence that You will make good on every promise to restore everything that is broken in this world, including everything that is broken in me. And may that renewed hope lead me to pursue godliness (v2) - for Your glory and my good.
