1 Peter 1

September 1, 2022

“But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’ Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially, live your lives as foreigners here in reverent fear.” (v15-17)

God’s call on our lives is to be holy - which means to be set apart from the world and set apart for God. We live in this world, but we are to do so as “foreigners” (v17). Elsewhere Peter says we are to live here as “exiles” (1:1; 2:11). In other words, we live in this world, but we’re not to think of it as our ultimate home. Our citizenship is in Heaven.

Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I praise You for the home You are preparing for me in that heavenly country. Forgive me for how often I slip into treating this world as if it’s my real home - as evidenced by me putting my hope in the pleasures and comforts that I can find in the here and now. Remind me anew that this world is not my real home and that these short-term pleasures are temporary and fleeting so that I stay focused on being Your ambassador, pointing those around me to the glory of my heavenly country.

Use the following steps to guide your daily time with the Lord…

  • Start with prayer. Ask God to open your heart to help you understand and receive His Word.

  • Read and observe the passage carefully. As needed, read a second Bible version to help with understanding.

    ➡️ What does it say?

What does this passage teach me about God? What does it say about my sinful nature and my need for God’s grace? How does this passage point to Jesus?

  • ➡️ What am I going to do about it?

Does this passage include a promise to claim, an action/attitude to avoid/embrace, or a principle to apply? How can this truth apply to my life? What could my next step be? How can I share this with others? Is there a verse or section of Scripture I need to memorize?
