1 Peter 2

September 2, 2022

“Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.” (v2-3)

Peter compares a healthy Christian that craves God’s Word (1:23-25) to a newborn baby craving milk. I remember when our children were babies. They got so excited to eat. It was their favorite thing. Peter says this is to be our attitude toward the pure Word - that we would “crave it” (v2), knowing that it is how we will “grow up” (v3) in our faith.

Father, I praise You for the gift of Your Word. It is my life. It is my daily sustenance. But I confess that some days I still treat Your Word like I used to treat a side of vegetables, competing with dessert for my affection. I know God’s Word is good for me, but some days I still approach it more out of duty than childlike craving. And so, I pray for You to continue to transform my spiritual palate so that I crave Your Word like I crave my favorite desserts.

Use the following steps to guide your daily time with the Lord…

  • Start with prayer. Ask God to open your heart to help you understand and receive His Word.

  • Read and observe the passage carefully. As needed, read a second Bible version to help with understanding.

    ➡️ What does it say?

What does this passage teach me about God? What does it say about my sinful nature and my need for God’s grace? How does this passage point to Jesus?

  • ➡️ What am I going to do about it?

Does this passage include a promise to claim, an action/attitude to avoid/embrace, or a principle to apply? How can this truth apply to my life? What could my next step be? How can I share this with others? Is there a verse or section of Scripture I need to memorize?
