Acts 14

February 23, 2022

“Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch, strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith.” (v 21-22‬)

Paul and Barnabas go back to the very place where Paul had been stoned and left for dead (v19). Why? “To strengthen and encourage the disciples there to remain true to the faith.” What a beautiful picture of a shepherd’s heart. Not only did Paul risk his life to preach the gospel to those who did not yet know Christ (evangelism), he’s now willing to put himself in harm’s way again for the sake of strengthening the flock of new believers (discipleship).

Lord, I used to be so afraid of death and pain. And then, You led me to do ministry in inner city Detroit - where I had to face these fears. And there I found You faithful to give me courage to face danger, and a love for people that I did not previously have. Thank You for this - another gift of the gospel! Where so many today are paralyzed by fear, I ask You to grow in me courage and an eternal perspective in the face of danger or death, always mingled with a deeper love for and desire to encourage Your people!

Use the following steps to guide your daily time with the Lord…

  • Start with prayer. Ask God to open your heart to help you understand and receive His Word.

  • Read and observe the passage carefully. As needed, read a second Bible version to help with understanding.

    ➡️ What does it say?

What does this passage teach me about God? What does it say about my sinful nature and my need for God’s grace? How does this passage point to Jesus?

  • ➡️ What am I going to do about it?

Does this passage include a promise to claim, an action/attitude to avoid/embrace, or a principle to apply? How can this truth apply to my life? What could my next step be? How can I share this with others? Is there a verse or section of Scripture I need to memorize?
