Luke 18

January 26, 2022

Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.
— Luke 18:1

Just to make sure we don’t miss the meaning of Jesus’ parable of the persistent widow (v2-9), Luke tells us the point: keep praying and persevering! Clearly, Jesus knows that we will be tempted to become discouraged in the face of injustice (the widow is asking for ‘justice’ - v3 and also v5, 7 & 8), when we are getting the short end of the stick. Thus, this parable serves as a reminder that God cares for those who belong to Him (‘His chosen ones’ - v7) and He will see that they ‘get justice’ (v8).

Lord, I worship You for being the Perfect, just Judge of the universe. I know that You’re not uncaring or aloof. I also know that injustice will not last forever. And yet that doesn’t always motivate me to keep praying and persevering. Forgive me for the times I get complacent, lazy or apathetic. And empower me (by Your grace and awareness of Your care and concern) to keep calling out to You about matters and people that You can fix!

Use the following steps to guide your daily time with the Lord…

  • Start with prayer. Ask God to open your heart to help you understand and receive His Word.

  • Read and observe the passage carefully. As needed, read a second Bible version to help with understanding.

    ➡️ What does it say?

What does this passage teach me about God? What does it say about my sinful nature and my need for God’s grace? How does this passage point to Jesus?

  • ➡️ What am I going to do about it?

Does this passage include a promise to claim, an action/attitude to avoid/embrace, or a principle to apply? How can this truth apply to my life? What could my next step be? How can I share this with others? Is there a verse or section of Scripture I need to memorize?
