Luke 21

January 31, 2022

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
— Luke 21:34

Jesus makes this statement in the context of his prediction of the destruction of the temple (which happened in 70 AD) and his return (which we can count on because he was right about everything else he said!). If Jesus says something, we can count on it. His words will never pass away. His Word spoke the world into existence and sustains it (Hebrews 1:2-3), and therefore His Word is what sustains me and is my very life!

I praise You, Lord, for Your Word. Thank You, Jesus, for not only being the Living Word (John 1:1), but for giving us the written word - so that we might know You, put our faith in You, be saved by You, and learn to walk with You. I confess that I can grow bored, at times, with reading and studying You Word. But that is because I slip into giving too much focus to the things of this earth, which ‘will pass away’ (v34). Grow in me a hunger for Your Word, and give me the eyes to see how Your Word really is my life, containing everything I need to live in a way that will bring You glory and me good!

Use the following steps to guide your daily time with the Lord…

  • Start with prayer. Ask God to open your heart to help you understand and receive His Word.

  • Read and observe the passage carefully. As needed, read a second Bible version to help with understanding.

    ➡️ What does it say?

What does this passage teach me about God? What does it say about my sinful nature and my need for God’s grace? How does this passage point to Jesus?

  • ➡️ What am I going to do about it?

Does this passage include a promise to claim, an action/attitude to avoid/embrace, or a principle to apply? How can this truth apply to my life? What could my next step be? How can I share this with others? Is there a verse or section of Scripture I need to memorize?
