Luke 19

January 27, 2022

Jesus went on to tell them a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the Kingdom of God was going to appear at once.
— Luke 19:1

Jesus’ first coming inaugurated the first fruits of the Kingdom, as He previewed God’s Kingdom to come. But His first coming did not usher in the Kingdom in its final and glorious form. According to the parable (v12-27) God values long-term investments and apprenticing us for the roles we will play on the New Earth in His Kingdom. And so He entrusts us now with time/talents/treasure because He is honored by us investing our earthly time/talents/treasures in His eternal Kingdom. His return, then, is not just to rule us, but to reward those of us, who live with a long-term Kingdom investment mindset.

Lord Jesus, I praise You as the great and glorious King You are! And I thank You that Your Kingdom and Kingship (on the New Earth) is coming. Grant me the vision to have a long-term investment strategy with my time, talents, and treasure - investing it in the things that will matter when Your Kingdom comes! Make me faithful today with whatever You’ve entrusted to me - that I might hear those words at Your coming, ‘Well done, my good servant! Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ___ cities.’ (v17)

Use the following steps to guide your daily time with the Lord…

  • Start with prayer. Ask God to open your heart to help you understand and receive His Word.

  • Read and observe the passage carefully. As needed, read a second Bible version to help with understanding.

    ➡️ What does it say?

What does this passage teach me about God? What does it say about my sinful nature and my need for God’s grace? How does this passage point to Jesus?

  • ➡️ What am I going to do about it?

Does this passage include a promise to claim, an action/attitude to avoid/embrace, or a principle to apply? How can this truth apply to my life? What could my next step be? How can I share this with others? Is there a verse or section of Scripture I need to memorize?
