Acts 6

February 11, 2022

“In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Hellenistic Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food.” (v 1‬)

Even in the early days of the church, when the Apostles themselves were leading, and the church was growing (v1, 7) - there were still problems. There was still “complaining” (v1). There was still a sense that some in the church were being favored over others. And so the church leadership did two things:

  1. Gathered to address the legitimate need, which involved recruiting and appointing other gifted people to solve the problem (v2-3).

  2. Stayed focused on the primary assignment that God had called them to (v4).

The result?

  • The plan was appreciated by the church family (v5a)

  • The leadership of the church was expanded (v5b-6)

  • The Word of God spread and more people became believers (v7)

Lord, I praise You for Your church, which, though filled with problems and complainers (like me) is still Your chosen means of representing You on earth. Empower me to lead like Your Word illustrates here in Acts 6 - recruiting others to take on vital ministries, while staying focused on what I know You’ve called me to. For Your glory, my good and the building up of Your Church!

Use the following steps to guide your daily time with the Lord…

  • Start with prayer. Ask God to open your heart to help you understand and receive His Word.

  • Read and observe the passage carefully. As needed, read a second Bible version to help with understanding.

    ➡️ What does it say?

What does this passage teach me about God? What does it say about my sinful nature and my need for God’s grace? How does this passage point to Jesus?

  • ➡️ What am I going to do about it?

Does this passage include a promise to claim, an action/attitude to avoid/embrace, or a principle to apply? How can this truth apply to my life? What could my next step be? How can I share this with others? Is there a verse or section of Scripture I need to memorize?
