Galatians 3

March 25, 2022

“Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: ‘Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.’” (v13‬)

The curse that hung over us and all of creation is not broken by our self-effort or a religious incantation. The curse was broken through Christ taking the curse upon Himself. That’s why Paul quotes Deuteronomy 21:23, ‘Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.’ (v13) Paul is explaining what was happening at the cross: Jesus was taking upon Himself the curse of sin, so we could be “redeemed” (v14), and set free.

Lord, thank You for taking the punishment for sin - so that there is now no condemnation for me. Thank You for experiencing forsakenness - so that I will never again be alone. Thank You for enduring the curse of sin so that I can be forever free of guilt!

Before the throne of God above
I have a strong and perfect plea
A great High Priest, whose name is Love
Who ever lives and pleads for me

When Satan tempts me to despair
And tells me of the guilt within
Upward I look, and see Him there
who made an end to all my sin

Because the sinless Savior died
My sinful soul is counted free
For God the just is satisfied
To look on Him and pardon me

Use the following steps to guide your daily time with the Lord…

  • Start with prayer. Ask God to open your heart to help you understand and receive His Word.

  • Read and observe the passage carefully. As needed, read a second Bible version to help with understanding.

    ➡️ What does it say?

What does this passage teach me about God? What does it say about my sinful nature and my need for God’s grace? How does this passage point to Jesus?

  • ➡️ What am I going to do about it?

Does this passage include a promise to claim, an action/attitude to avoid/embrace, or a principle to apply? How can this truth apply to my life? What could my next step be? How can I share this with others? Is there a verse or section of Scripture I need to memorize?
