Hebrews 2

April 14, 2022

“Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil — and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.” (v14-15)

When Jesus “tasted death for us” (v9), he not only set us free from the penalty of death, He set us free from “the power of death” (v14). Because we have a Savior who passed through the doorway of death and conquered it through His resurrection, we no longer need to fear death. We no longer need to be afraid of a terminal illness, war, old age, serving in a dangerous place, catching COVID, or receiving a cancer diagnosis. The fear of death no longer has a hold on us - because we now belong to the One who “tasted death” (v9) and absorbed its sting for us!

Lord Jesus, I praise You for graciously and courageously facing down and defeating death. You, who did not deserve to die, willingly entered into the enemy’s final stronghold - and overpowered ‘Death’ through Your death. Hallelujah! Thank You for the way Your victory transforms how I view and approach death. It is no longer something I need to fear, because its sting has been removed. Now, death is simply the doorway into Your presence and Paradise.

Use the following steps to guide your daily time with the Lord…

  • Start with prayer. Ask God to open your heart to help you understand and receive His Word.

  • Read and observe the passage carefully. As needed, read a second Bible version to help with understanding.

    ➡️ What does it say?

What does this passage teach me about God? What does it say about my sinful nature and my need for God’s grace? How does this passage point to Jesus?

  • ➡️ What am I going to do about it?

Does this passage include a promise to claim, an action/attitude to avoid/embrace, or a principle to apply? How can this truth apply to my life? What could my next step be? How can I share this with others? Is there a verse or section of Scripture I need to memorize?
