Luke 13

January 19, 2022

At that time Pharisees came to Jesus and said, ‘Leave this place and go somewhere else. Herod wants to kill you.’ He replied, “Go tell that fox, ‘I will drive out demons and heal people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal.’
— Luke 13:31-32

The Pharisees weren’t trying to protect Jesus from harm - especially after having just been ‘humiliated’ (v17) by Him. They were looking for a way to get rid of Jesus, and they thought inducing ‘fear of a ruthless ruler’ would do it. But Jesus marched to the beat of his Father’s will, knowing that he had nothing to fear until He ‘reached the goal’ (v32) His Father had for his life. Jesus knew he was immortal until he had done everything His Father had planned for his life. The same is true for us who are in Christ!

Lord, thank You for living a bold, courageous life - undeterred by the things and situations and people of this world that instilled fear in others. Empower me to live this kind of life - confident that I am in the arms of a good sovereign God, who will not let me die before I have reached the goal and purpose that You have determined for my life.

Use the following steps to guide your daily time with the Lord…

  • Start with prayer. Ask God to open your heart to help you understand and receive His Word.

  • Read and observe the passage carefully. As needed, read a second Bible version to help with understanding.

    ➡️ What does it say?

What does this passage teach me about God? What does it say about my sinful nature and my need for God’s grace? How does this passage point to Jesus?

  • ➡️ What am I going to do about it?

Does this passage include a promise to claim, an action/attitude to avoid/embrace, or a principle to apply? How can this truth apply to my life? What could my next step be? How can I share this with others? Is there a verse or section of Scripture I need to memorize?
