Luke 8

January 12, 2022

The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, ‘Return home and tell how much God has done for you.’ So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him.
— Luke 8:38-39

After receiving the gift of salvation, this man wants to follow Jesus - and live for Jesus - in grateful response for His deliverance.  But he has his own ideas of what ‘following’ and ‘living for Jesus’ looks like.  Jesus, though, has something more simple in mind for this man: “go home (to family, friends and those who know you) to be a witness to them.

Lord, I confess my tendency to oscillate between ‘doing my own thing’ and seeking to do ‘some great thing for You’… when You are (mostly) calling me to do the simple thing: be a witness for You in my everyday life with family, friends, and people You’ve put in my life. Empower me today to be a missionary right where You’ve planted me - giving testimony to how You’ve saved me and done for me what I could not do for myself!

— Pastor Joshua Brooks

Use the following steps to guide your daily time with the Lord…

  • Start with prayer. Ask God to open your heart to help you understand and receive His Word.

  • Read and observe the passage carefully. As needed, read a second Bible version to help with understanding.

    ➡️ What does it say?

What does this passage teach me about God? What does it say about my sinful nature and my need for God’s grace? How does this passage point to Jesus?

  • ➡️ What am I going to do about it?

Does this passage include a promise to claim, an action/attitude to avoid/embrace, or a principle to apply? How can this truth apply to my life? What could my next step be? How can I share this with others? Is there a verse or section of Scripture I need to memorize?
