Luke 3

January 5, 2022

John went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. As is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: ‘A voice of one calling in the desert, “Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.”
— Luke 3:3-4

John’s mission in life was to point to Jesus (v15-17).  His purpose was to call people to repent (v8) and to proclaim the good news of the coming Messiah (v18). John was even willing to suffer imprisonment (v20) and persecution in this life - because his heart was so set on the coming kingdom.

Lord, forgive me for how quickly I can default to making this life all about me, my hopes, my goals, and myself. May Your Spirit do a work in me so that I (like John the Baptist) see Your coming Kingdom as so glorious - that I’m willing to endure scorn and suffering in this life to point others to You - whether it’s people who are interested in You (like the crowds of v7) or those who are offended by the call to repent of their sin (like King Herod in v19-20). Make me (like John) a signpost to Jesus this day!

Use the following steps to guide your daily time with the Lord…

  • Start with prayer. Ask God to open your heart to help you understand and receive His Word.

  • Read and observe the passage carefully. As needed, read a second Bible version to help with understanding.

    ➡️ What does it say?

What does this passage teach me about God? What does it say about my sinful nature and my need for God’s grace? How does this passage point to Jesus?

  • ➡️ What am I going to do about it?

Does this passage include a promise to claim, an action/attitude to avoid/embrace, or a principle to apply? How can this truth apply to my life? What could my next step be? How can I share this with others? Is there a verse or section of Scripture I need to memorize?
