Luke 5

January 7, 2022

Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.
— Luke 5:5

Jesus asks Peter to do something very simple (it wasn’t a confusing assignment), but something that didn’t make sense according to Peter’s common sense or experience.   It was a task that required Peter to trust Jesus more than trusting his own giftedness and expertise.  And though he seems to have taken on the job a bit begrudgingly, he does it… and then experiences God’s miraculous provision - in a way where God gets all the glory - and Peter realizes, even more acutely, his own sinfulness (v8).

Lord, thank You that You (and You alone) are fully trustworthy. I confess how often I trust in my own gifts or common sense or experience more than I trust in You. Forgive me for such arrogance. Grow in me such a deep trust in You - that my response to Your any (and every) assignment to me is: “Because You say so, I will” (v5). And then, like Peter, may my eyes be further opened to Your greatness and glory!

Use the following steps to guide your daily time with the Lord…

  • Start with prayer. Ask God to open your heart to help you understand and receive His Word.

  • Read and observe the passage carefully. As needed, read a second Bible version to help with understanding.

    ➡️ What does it say?

What does this passage teach me about God? What does it say about my sinful nature and my need for God’s grace? How does this passage point to Jesus?

  • ➡️ What am I going to do about it?

Does this passage include a promise to claim, an action/attitude to avoid/embrace, or a principle to apply? How can this truth apply to my life? What could my next step be? How can I share this with others? Is there a verse or section of Scripture I need to memorize?
